Transdisciniplinary And Pattern Opportunities Solid Liquid G

What metapatterns and other large patterns or concepts can be included throughout this unit and how
can they be used?

  • Specific concepts and patterns can be implemented in our lesson. Cycles are the most prominate metapattern in this lesson, because the transformation of substances is a continuous pattern. Solid to a liquid, liquid to a gas, gas to a liquid, and liquid to a solid. The children can further explore this activity and come up with patterns they see in the lesson. Having a class discussion on patterns can also link this lesson to real life situations.
  • Lesson Integration can be implemented by incorporating the history of chocolate students can develop a historical understanding of where chocolate came from and its affect on human society.
  • Students can measure heated water, amount of chocolate mix and how many marshmallows will be needed. They can also use fractions and proportions to get the perfect balance of water, chocolate and marshmallows.
  • They can incorporate literacy to the unit by writing their own recopies and researching facts about chocolate and writing a reflection.

Describe where in each subunit or other areas of your unit, you can engage children in exploring,
inquiring into, and developing skills in other disciplines. Where can history be included as a natural
piece of your unit? Where can social action take place? Where can art, writing, and mathematics be
used as natural parts of this unit.

  • Incorporate a sub lesson on writing and creating their own recipies. They can make their own recipie for hot chocolate, or create a new recipie. This will incorporate directions as well as writing. They will be required to make step by step directions that someone can follow.
  • Incorporate a sub lesson using math. They can use measurements and conversions to find the exact amount of water, chocolate, and marshmallows to make their chocolate mix. They will have to know how to use measuring cups, adding, subtracting, doubling the recepie, etc. They can work in groups to find all the mathematical equations necessary for this experiment.
  • Social studies is already incorporated in our lesson by having the history of chocolate and important facts. They can further their exploration by researching information on their own and sharing with the class.
  • Art can be incorporated by having the students draw diagrams of the procedures taken to make hot chocolate. They can make their own directions using pictures and visual representation for the procedures. They can color and decorate many different ways, if they want to incorporate art in another way, they will have the freedom to do so.
